In reply to MattAnkers's post on July 24, It's possible but perhaps more work than it's worth. In any case, it will require a macro. The first step is in the setup of the dropdown content control. In the Properties dialog, when you click the Add button to create a selection, there are two boxes labeled Display Name and Value. By default, when you enter a display name, the Value box gets the same entry -- for example, you type 1 in the Display Name, and Value automatically shows 1.

But then you can replace the Value with anything you want. Whatever you put there won't appear in the document, but it's available to a macro. I'm not sure of the maximum length of a Value, but I suspect it's characters. If you need longer entries than that, you could store them in the attached template as AutoText entries, and make the Value in the content control hold the name of the AutoText corresponding to the number in the Display Name. Have I confused you yet?

Also in the content control's Properties, put a unique value in the Tag box so the macro can identify the control. The other part is the macro that replaces the selected number with the content of the corresponding Value. Paragraphs 1.

First it checks the Tag of the control that was exited to see if it was the one you prepared change the "tagTest" to match whatever you put in the Tag field of the control. If it's the right control but the user didn't select a number, the next statement says to ignore the placeholder "Choose an item".
